Shirley Zhu, General Manager of Greater China, is instrumental in establishing Sesame Street as the leading player in children’s media and education in the region.

Shirley oversees content development and distribution, education, merchandising, location-based entertainment, and community engagement.  She plays a critical role in building strategic partnership with key local partners. Since 2013, she has established ongoing strategic collaborations with CCTV Children’s Channel to co-produce the top-rated “Sesame Street Chinese New Year Special” every year.  During 2010, she managed the successful launch of “Sesame Street’s Big Bird Looks at the World” together with Shanghai Media Group. Under her leadership, Sesame Street has also expanded on China’s top digital platforms including Tencent Video, Baidu’s iQIYI, Alibaba’s Tmall Box, BesTV, and others.  To achieve Sesame Workshop’s mission of helping children grow smarter, stronger, and kinder, Shirley led the efforts to build joint educational programs with some of the most influential global and national institutions, including UNICEF China, China Welfare Institute, China Youth Development Foundation, and Parenting Science Magazine. Shirley has also established the mall-based family entertainment business in the region and has significantly expanded the crossover collaborations featuring “Sesame Street’s 50th Anniversary.”

After working Sesame Workshop’s New York Headquarters for several years, Shirley moved back to Shanghai in 2013 to establish Sesame Workshop’s China office and help build the brand to reach millions of Chinese children and their families.

Prior to joining Sesame Workshop, Shirley was a consultant at McKinsey & Company based in Hong Kong.  She earned her MBA from Harvard Business School and holds a BBA in finance from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
