Benjamin Lehmann leads the production and creative direction for Sesame Street and all other live-action content at Sesame Workshop. In this newly created role, he collaborates with production and distribution partners and is responsible for the ongoing creation and long-term planning of live-action programming that drives Sesame Workshop’s mission forward, increases child engagement, and builds upon the organization’s growing slate of live-action shows.

Continuing as Executive Producer for Sesame Street, Lehmann oversees the creative direction and production teams for the iconic children’s show and is also a director for the series.

Lehmann developed and Executive Produced 2020’s The Not-Too-Late Show with Elmo, a family viewing experience that launched on HBO Max; he also directed the pilot for that series. In addition, Lehmann was co-Executive Producer and series director for Helpsters, a children’s coding show for Apple TV+.

During the pandemic, Lehmann helped design remote, home-based shooting techniques that allowed the Sesame Street production teams and Muppet performers to make short-form content and long-form specials as well as a number of International Town Halls for CNN including three installments of The ABC’s of COVID-19, addressing everything from hygiene and safety, to back-to-school, to navigating the holidays during the pandemic. His team advanced Sesame Workshop’s Racial Justice initiative with the narrative special The Power of We, on the importance of standing up to racism, which premiered on October 15th, 2020 on HBO Max and PBS.

Lehmann has won multiple awards, including 15 Emmy Awards and 6 Producer’s Guild Awards for his work as a director and producer. He was awarded the Emmy for Best Directing in a children’s category—during a virtual ceremony—for Sesame Street’s 50th season kick-off episode: Big Bird’s Road Trip

Prior to joining Sesame Workshop, Lehmann was an independent producer, cinematographer, and director with his own production company; his work spanned feature films and television. Lehmann received a BA from Colorado University, Boulder. He lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife and two children.
