Children's Education Initiatives in Colombia | Heart-healthy lessons and more

Millions of children in Colombia, Mexico, and other parts of Latin America watch our Plaza Sésamo program. In addition, we’re reaching more than two million Colombian children through Plaza Sésamo educational outreach efforts, public service announcements, and a joint UNICEF website.1

With a boisterous mix of Muppets, live-action, and animations, Plaza Sésamo addresses the spectrum of children’s educational needs with a special focus on nutrition and physical activity. The show’s lovable Muppets model positive behaviors in ways that motivate children, like a song about juicy guavas and tasty peaches or an energizing video that gets young bodies up and moving. Health-related education enlivens 50 Plaza Sésamo episodes, while powerful outreach materials reinforce the learning for children in schools and community centers. Families take the lessons to heart: In one study led by Mount Sinai Medical Center, children’s scores on health-related knowledge, attitudes, and habits improved by 15 percent after an eight-month intervention.2

Spearheaded by renowned cardiologist Dr. Valentin Fuster, this initiative is made possible thanks to the generous support of Mr. Julio Mario and Mrs. Beatrice Santo Domingo.
