What Is Sticker World?

Kid City Sticker World is a special Web environment created for 6- to 12-year-olds by Sesame Workshop to challenge young minds and promote social interaction. Within this safe online world, your child can play games, collect and trade electronic stickers, build a Web page, and be part of the coolest kids' community on the Internet.

What Are Stickers?

Stickers are electronic "objects" kids collect, trade, and play with in Sticker World. Using stickers as basic building blocks, your child can build her own personal web page -- an electronic collage of colorful images, messages, animations and interactive games -- that expresses her individuality.

Stickers are grouped by topic, including Animals, Adventure, Machines, Science, Nature, Sports, Space, and Transportation. Some stickers are decorative images. Some stickers are animated and move when clicked. Some stickers contain interactive games that are both fun and educational.

What Can My Child Do in Sticker World?

Sticker World encourages children to play, explore, build a Web page, collect stickers, and interact with other kids.

Like other interactive media, Sticker World offers rewarding levels of experience to appeal to both first-time explorers and adventurous users. Your child can choose the level of involvement that most suits her. Younger children or newcomers may simply want to visit the Play Room or explore kid-designed Web pages. Older children can immerse themselves in collecting and trading stickers, building their own Web pages, and interacting with other Sticker Kid pages.

What Can My Child Learn in Sticker World?

Sticker World is a self-enclosed system with rules, goals, and internal logic that motivates kids to use their smarts. As they explore and master the system, kids develop their social, cognitive, and logical thinking skills. They also learn how to resourcefully manage their sticker collection, deciding what to display on their Web pages, what to store in their private sticker bins, and what to trade.

Individual stickers develop skills in a variety of curriculum areas, including language arts, science, math, social studies, and logical and critical thinking.

Creating a Web page builds spatial relations and design skills. Each page has a pre-defined grid. Stickers come in various sizes that fill one or more grid squares. How many stickers your child can fit on her page depends on sticker size and placement.

Sticker World encourages kids to explore cause and effect. Your child can take a quiz, get the results, and then explore what the outcome would have been with different answers. Or, she can fill in the blanks to complete a Sticker Lib story, view the results, and then make a completely different story.

Sticker World offers opportunities for self-expression and communication including messages, page mottoes and polls. Some stickers, like Smileys and My Weather Report, encourage your child to express her mood visually.

Sticker World rewards ongoing participation and interaction. Kids are motivated to log on regularly to enhance their sticker collections (new stickers appear regularly!), visit other kids' pages and see who's visited their pages. Each time someone visits your child's page, she gets a message telling her who was there and how many sticker points she received.

The Sticker World Economy

Sticker World is free for members and non-members alike! But, like other games, Sticker World has a point-based mini economy. Every sticker has a name, description, and point value. The point value depends on sticker size and level of interactivity. Animated stickers (the ones with a lightning bolt) are usually worth more points than picture stickers. Sticker games (the ones with a play symbol) have the highest point value. Each sticker is released in a particular quantity. When the supply of a sticker drops below 20, the sticker becomes rare and increases in point value.

Kids start the "game" with 300 sticker points and 6 starter stickers. They can earn more points by visiting other kids' pages and playing sticker games--cracking codes, navigating mazes, and solving challenging puzzles. Your child also earns points each time someone visits her Web page. As your child plays and learns, Sticker World tallies the number of points she earns.

To stay active in Sticker World, your child must log on at least once every six months. Pages that are inactive for six months will be "retired"; kids who own them keep their points, but their stickers go back to the appropriate sticker zones so they're still "in play." Owners of retired pages will receive the current point value for each sticker returned to the sticker zones. Kids who log on after being away for six months will receive a new set of starter stickers and the same number of points they had when their account was retired.
