Pinky Dinky Doo
A Serious Case of the Literary Sillies
| Mr. Guinea Pig, Tyler, Pinky (Pinky Dinky Doo) |
Seven-year-old Pinky Dinky Doo is a pink-haired girl with a stupendous imagination. She’s very good at making up stories about everything from rude alligators to shoes made out of salami. Pinky’s little brother Tyler Dinky Doo often inspires her storytelling – when he has a real-life problem, she’ll conjure up a creative story that leads to a solution. Along the way, she uses all sorts of wack-a-doodle, witty alliteration and some goofy doofy word play. Pinky loves to use Great Big Fancy Words like “flabbergasted” and “exasperated,” and she’ll use each word several times in each story she tells, so young viewers will remember it. Tyler Dinky Doo sometimes stops her to ask questions, talk about a plot point in her story, or ask for the meaning of a Great Big Fancy Word. As Pinky weaves her clever story, she figures things out! “Pinky Dinky Doo knew just what to do!” she’ll say, and then she’ll end her story with a clever twist and solve Tyler’s real-life problem. Both at once! Using her regular, kid-sized brain!
Pinky Dinky Doo is an animated series based on author Jim Jinkins’ books. A collaboration between Sesame Workshop and Cartoon Pizza, Jim Jinkins’ animation company, the show supports critical early literacy skills. The program is designed to promote reading success by giving preschoolers tools to create their own stories, thereby equipping them to become readers and writers.
The show has four primary learning goals:
- Celebrating the power of inventing stories
- Introducing basic elements of narrative such as setting and plot
- Helping children understand what they hear
- Expanding vocabulary
Through wildly imaginative stories, games and songs, this engaging program supports critical early literacy skills.
Pinky began airing in 2006, and is currently being shown in Canada, the United Kingdom, Latin America, Australia, and the United States. The show’s second season launched on Noggin in September 2008.
Pinky's momentum continued with the November 2008 launch of a "great big fancy" website, which offers innovative interactive content for little literary minds. The site features fun activities, videos, and podcasts containing rhyme, rhythm, and alliteration. With games like Your Story Box and The Great Big Fancy Word Game, kids aged 4 to 7 can learn new vocabulary words and put together silly, mysterious, and out-of-this world stories just like Pinky. Stupendous!
