Serve this side dish at your Passover meal or as an afternoon snack.
by Michele Urvater

Preparation time: 10 minutes
Servings: 4

Have your children help prepare this simple Passover dish made of chopped apples and nuts held together by honey. You can also serve haroset as a healthy afternoon snack, stirred into plain yogurt or placed atop fresh pear or banana slices.

2 pounds apples, preferably Granny Smith, peeled and coarsely chopped
3/4 cup coarsely chopped nuts, such as almonds or walnuts
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 1/2 tablespoons honey or superfine sugar
3 tablespoons grape juice, preferably Concord, or red wine (for adults)

  1. In the bowl of a food processor, finely chop the apples and nuts. Add remaining ingredients and process on high speed until mixture reaches a desired consistency, either finely chopped or ground to a paste. (If necessary, add another tablespoon grape juice, to reach a smoother consistency.)

  2. Store covered in the refrigerator, and use within three days. (The apples will brown, but the flavor will keep.) Serve at room temperature.
