Fairy Tale Costume

Create a magical world with two easy fairy tale props.
by Franny Shuker-Haines

What you need:

(for the wand) Unsharpened pencil or wooden dowel 2 to 3 feet of ribbon, any kind
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Construction paper or poster board Decorative arts and crafts supplies (sequins, glitter, stickers, markers, or crayons) (for the hat)
  • 1 piece of poster board
  • Stapler
  • Scissors
  • Square piece of netting, tulle, silk, or satin, or an old scarf or bandana

1. First, make the hat. Hold the poster board horizontally in front of you. Bring the outer edges down and toward you until they overlap and form a cone. (The bottom edge will not be even.)

2. Hold this cone over your child's head and adjust the size, always being sure to keep a definite point at the top. When the bottom of the cone fits around her head snugly, remove the cone from her head and staple the overlapping sides together.

3. Use the scissors to even out the bottom edge of the hat. (It should be able to stand up on a flat surface.)

4. Grab a corner of your fabric square and pull it through the top of the cone, so that a small piece of it is inside the hat. Staple in place.

5. Decorate the hat with sequins, glitter, stickers, markers, or crayons.

6. Now, make the wand. Glue a ribbon around an unsharpened pencil to make it look fancy. First, run a thin line of glue down the center of the first six inches of the ribbon.

7. Starting at the eraser end, wrap the ribbon around the pencil, glue side against the pencil, working on a slight diagonal. Overlap the ribbon slightly as you go, and add glue as necessary.

8. When you get to the end of the pencil, cut the ribbon. Save the excess.

9. Cut two stars out of construction paper or poster board.

10. Lay one down on the table. Run a line of glue all around the edges.

11. Lay the top of the pencil down on the star. Now, line the second star up with the first. Press down so the stars stick together, and the top of the pencil is "stuck" between the layers.

12. Decorate the star. Tie the excess ribbon in a bow around the wand. Your magic wand is ready to cast a spell!
