1. Have your child take the plastic lid off the oatmeal canister; turn the canister upside down.
2. Let him paint the "top" white.
3. Invite your child to cover the side of the canister (all around) and the bottom inside with a coat of glue.
4. Help him wrap the red felt around the canister, extending one end over the bottom edge so you can glue it inside. Smooth out any wrinkles; allow the glue to set. Trim any excess felt.
5. Let your child squeeze glue on the back of the two longer blue felt strips, and glue one around each end of the canister.
6. Help him glue seven white stars on each blue strip. They should be evenly spaced and exactly opposite each other, top and bottom.
7. Keeping the yarn in one uncut piece, show your child how to glue it onto the drum. Start between two stars at the top; glue the end down. Bring the yarn down diagonally, and glue between two bottom stars. Cover the whole drum, bringing the yarn up and down and gluing at each point between the stars.
8. Shape the remaining piece of blue felt into a small loop and glue it onto the back of the drum near the top.
9. Run the rawhide cord through the loop, and tie the ends in a bow.
10. Have your child paint the dowels red or blue. Let the paint dry.
11. Help him roll the clay into two small balls. Push each ball down onto a dowel end to create a pocket, then remove. Bake the clay according to package directions. Let cool. Glue the balls to the dowels to make drumsticks.
12. Once you’ve helped your child to create a drum, make music together! Encourage your child to create her own rhythms as she plays the drum and dances to the music!
