“G” IS FOR GARIBALDO!

SESAME WORKSHOP AND TV CULTURA BRING VILA SÉSAMO BACK TO BRAZIL

New York, NEW YORK and São Paulo, BRAZIL, April 18, 2007
Brazil’s beloved Muppet bird is back to help teach a new generation of children their ABCs and 123s.  Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind Vila Sésamo, and TV Cultura, Brazil’s leading broadcaster for parents and children, will be debuting a one-hour Vila Sésamo -branded children’s block this fall. Children will be invited to laugh and learn daily with Play With Me Sesame, Global Grover and Elmo’s World—all dubbed into Portuguese. In addition, 78 brand new locally-produced live action films featuring kids from across Brazil will showcase the rich cultural and environmental diversity of the region.

Vila Sésamo
, the first Sesame Street international co-production, premiered in Brazil in October 1972.  Since then, 25 additional local adaptations of the series have aired in such countries as Egypt, Germany, Mexico, and South Africa.

“We are privileged to have the opportunity to re-establish Vila Sésamo in Brazil with a production and broadcast partner who shares in our commitment to creating relevant and engaging content for young children,” said Gary E. Knell, President and CEO, Sesame Workshop. “Together with TV Cultura, we look forward to helping prepare a new generation of Brazilian children for a lifetime of learning.”

“Preschool programming is very limited in Brazil, particularly educational content,” said Marcos Mendonça, President, TV Cultura. “We are so excited to work with Sesame Workshop to build greater awareness and value to the importance of early childhood education in a way that is fun for children and nostalgic for adults in our community.”

Slated to begin in October, the Vila Sésamo block will air Monday through Friday on TV Cultura’s main terrestrial channel which reaches the largest measured percentage of children viewers during these airtimes. It will also air three times per day within 8-hour blocks on the broadcaster’s Pay TV Channel Ra Tim Bum, which reaches 900,000 subscribers per month.  Vila Sésamo will be carried on TV Cultura’s syndicated block of programming airing on other state broadcasters as well.
