AWARD-WINNING CHILDREN’S SERIES PLAZA SÉSAMO DEBUTS WITH TELENOVELA PARODIES & STARS
New York, NY and Mexico City, MEXICO, March 31, 2005
Telenovelas aren’t just popular with adults and children, they’re also popular with the Plaza Sésamo Muppets. Abelardo, Pancho and Lola will appear in Telenovela parodies to positively demonstrate emotions and help children understand them. This season of Plaza Sésamo, which features a new show opening in the 65 episodes, debuts in April on Televisa Niños.
In one segment, Lola is despondent when her phone doesn’t ring. She waits. She sighs. And she becomes very sad until Eduardo Santamarina finally drops by and tells her that her phone has been unplugged! But the guests don’t stop there. Latin American soccer player Jorge Campos will also visit the Plaza to plan a soccer match—getting the neighborhood to exercise and practice healthy habits in segments titled “Copa Sesamo.” Daniela Aedo, Sebastian Gonzalez “Chamagol,” Andrea Legarreta, Danna Paola, Adal Ramones and Marco Antonio Regil among others, will each make a special appearance to encourage laughter and learning throughout the year.
This season sees the inclusion of new regional live action and animated films, produced by local companies from throughout Latin America including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Venezuela highlighting the rich cultural diversity of the region. Viewers can look forward to new songs, including a hip hop version of the alphabet, as well as the cast singing classic Sesame Street tunes in Spanish. The award-winning series combines animated segments, live action films and original music videos with segments produced on the Plaza Sésamo set to engage children and help them better understand the world around them.
Plaza Sésamo cast members include classical actress Beatriz Aguirre, veteran performer Sergio Corona, former kids’ group singer Mariana Garza, soap star Benjamin Hidalgo, OV7 member M¨Balia and actor Pedro Romo, who play friends from the neighborhood. Abelardo is played by Héctor Márquez, Lola by Rocío Lara, and Pancho by Odín Dupeyrón.
The partners behind the new season of Plaza Sésamo are nonprofit educational organization Sesame Workshop, leading pan-regional Latin American pay-TV children’s network Discovery Kids, Mexico’s largest terrestrial producer and broadcaster Televisa Niños, and US broadcaster TeleFutura, who are producing and broadcasting the series. HIP TV, a division of L.A. based HIP Entertainment Group, are the Production Supervisors. Univision will be airing the series in Puerto Rico.
