CREATIVE INDIGO PAVING THE ROAD TO JALAN SESAMA
Producers Host Muppet Auditions to Find the Next Big Elmo
Jakarta, INDONESIA, and New York, NY, March 22, 2007
If your hands can sing, dance and act, you could be the next big Muppet! Jakarta-based production company, Creative Indigo, hosted auditions this week at the Sanctuary Health Club, Pavillion Apts, Jakarata, to select four Muppeteers for the new local Indonesian adaptation of the award-winning children’s program, Sesame Street. Jalan Sesama, which broadly translates to “Everyone’s Street,” will debut later this year. Sesame Street Muppeteer, Marty Robinson, who plays Snuffleupagus, Telly Monster, Slimey and many other characters on the U.S. program, was on hand to help select and train those selected.
Jalan Sesama, co-produced by nonprofit educational organization Sesame Workshop, will introduce four newly created Indonesian Muppet characters. Additionally, locally-produced live action and animation films, plus classic Sesame Street segments with Elmo, Cookie Monster and the rest of the Sesame friends will be featured. Jalan Sesama will help children learn basic cognitive skills such as literacy and mathematics, while representing the vibrant diversity of the country’s vast archipelago, an area rich in culture, tradition, language and the arts. Three seasons will be produced and air until 2010.
The new Indonesian Muppets of Jalan Sesame include:
“Coming into our final phase of pre-production, it’s a great honor for us to share the developments that we have achieved these last few months, namely the local name to the show as well as the newly selected puppeteers who will bring life to our local Muppets,” said Robby T. Winarka, Managing Director, Creative Indigo Production. “We hope that our desire to produce an educational and entertaining program for Indonesian children will encourage positive support from the audience.”
“It’s wonderful to be celebrating the birth of not one, but four, Muppet friends who will be sharing laughter and learning with the children of Indonesia,” said Ginger Brown, Sesame Workshop’s Executive Producer for Jalan Sesama. “Jalan Sesama embraces the similarities and differences that are part of children’s everyday lives and presents a locally produced program with global relevance.”
Jalan Sesama engages local educators and child development experts in creating relevant and age-appropriate content. The series will address issues specific to the region such as encouraging young children to protect the environment and appreciate diversity.
Initial funding for Jalan Sesama is made possible by the people of the United States of America through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). USAID has worked in partnership with the Indonesian Government for more than 40 years. Today, USAID/Indonesia has a $963 million, 5 year budget for various projects in the country, which is targeted to assistance programs focusing on improving the quality of basic education, effective democratic and decentralized governance, economic growth that leads to jobs and prosperity, and improving the quality of basic human services including health, water, food and the environment. USAID is also helping to rebuild Aceh after the tsunami with various programs including programs that support the implementation of the Aceh peace accord, which ended 30 years of conflict in Aceh province. - Momon – a 5-year-old boy who knows his letters but is still learning his numbers. He loves to draw, which makes crayon one of his favorite things in the world.
- Putri – an independent and curious young girl, who isn’t afraid to make mistakes. Putri is always asking Momon to teach her letters and numbers.
- Tantan – a wise ageless female Orangutan, who is family oriented and the peacemaker within the community. Tantan loves to read books and help the librarian.
- Jabrik – an ageless grouchy baby rhino, who likes to laugh. He is sincere and thinks he is very good with numbers.
