Sesame Street Nominated in Emmy Category Recognizing Use of New Media to Reach Viewers

New York, NY, June 24, 2009
Sesame Street
, which celebrates 40 years in November, is nominated in the Emmy Awards’ New Approaches—Daytime Entertainment category recognizing the use of new media (associated websites, webcasts, and interactivity).  The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) announced the nominees for the 36th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards last month.  Entries, judged online in its native format, are from over-the-air, cable, satellite and internet broadcasters.  Sesame Street is also nominated in 14 other categories.

“We are thrilled to be recognized for our work in emerging media,” said Miles Ludwig, Vice President and Executive Producer, Broadband Channel.  “What Sesame Street did for TV in 1969, we are now doing for broadband.  Children are learning in a brand new way and our job as responsible producers is to deliver engaging content to their fingertips and today it means via web, mobile and handheld devices.”

Sesame Workshop’s website www.sesamestreet.org is a major organizational initiative for the nonprofit.  Completely free of charge to all users, highlights of the website are: hundreds of flash-based games and activities to help preschoolers prepare for school; nearly 3,000 classic and current Sesame Street videos; and preschooler-friendly applications including “PlaySAFE,” which prevents children from navigating away to other sites on their own.  Sesamestreet.org has live action residents—Muppets greet kids upon arrival at the home page and guide them throughout their visit to the site.  A first for any children’s website, the live action component helps to guide users by indicating what tabs are live and where kids can point and click whether it’s for games, videos, playlists, Muppets or “My Street,” a feature that allows parents and children to personalize their experience by saving their favorite videos and games for frequent access.

The Sesame Street Podcast first launched in 2007 and within a week, reached #1 across all content categories in the iTunes podcast rankings.  Apple selected the Sesame Street Podcast among the “Best of 2007” and “Best of 2008” for the podcast category.

Daytime Emmy winners will be announced on August 30, 2009, when Sesame Street will be presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for its work in educating and entertaining.
