USAID and Sesame Workshop

USAID funding has helped bring Sesame Workshop programs to many countries.

Thanks to generous support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Sesame Workshop initiatives have been made possible in Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Kosovo, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, and Tanzania.

For nearly 50 years, individuals and communities around the world have benefited from the helping hand offered from the American people through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The agency provides economic and humanitarian assistance in more than 100 countries to those struggling to build better lives, recover from disaster, or shape more free and democratic societies.

The USAID partnership with Sesame Workshop offers engaging, educational, and culturally relevant content to children in need through mass media channels. Sesame Workshop and USAID collaborate with local producers, researchers, and educational content and outreach specialists to provide technical assistance and help build local capacity to produce educational media. This media is designed to:

  • Facilitate literacy and math skills
  • Promote respect and understanding
  • Increase positive knowledge and behaviors around health, hygiene, and nutrition

Locally produced versions of Sesame Street feature uniquely designed characters and sets that speak to the educational needs within each country. Examples of recent USAID supported co-productions include:

  • Bangladesh: Sisimpur emphasizes literacy, math, and socio-cultural skills and is helping to elevate the quality of early childhood education.

  • Egypt: Alam Simsim promotes girls’ education, builds literacy and numeracy skills, and promotes health and hygiene practices. More than six million children watch each week.

  • Indonesia: Jalan Sesama focuses on diversity, environmental awareness, and positive character building.

  • South AfricaTakalani Sesame promotes basic skills and addresses the HIV and AIDS crisis through educational content focused on attitudes, knowledge, and skills.

  • JordanHikayat Simsim helps improve basic education and life skills as well as promoting gender equity and parent and community involvement in education.
